Point vs Non-Point Pollution

This product can be used for Environmental Science Students over a range of grades. Equipment needed are Petri Dishes, Sand, Red Food Coloring, Droppers.

Students will place Sand in 2 Petri Dishes and wet until saturated. Both will be slightly tilted in one direction (on a textbook). In one, a pencil hole is constructed near the top of the tilted end and "concentrated" Mercury (water with red food coloring) is place in the hole. The "Plume" is then described. It will be narrow.

In the other Petri Dish 4 hole will be constructed in a line along the top end of the dish, and a less concentrated dose of Mercury will applied. The "Plume" will be more widespread but less concentrated.

They are then asked to compare the two and decide which one would be easier to mitigate.
