Students use a diagram of the Moon & Earth to label the 8 phases of the Moon which most instructors teach. They shade portions of the Earth which are dark on a polar view diagram, and then separately shade the dark portions of the Moon as seen from Earth, and label them as New Moon, Waxing Crescent, etc.
